DC Kaumeyer accepts job at Kentucky

Green Wave Defensive Coordinator Thom Kaumeyer accepted the job of Defensive Backs coach at Kentucky this past week, ending a short one-year stint with Tulane. While it seems like a lateral move on the surface, Kaumeyer actually played for Kentucky head coach Rich Brooks at Oregon in the late 1980's. He also coached under Brooks in the NFL, so the two have a lot of experience together. Tulane led Conference USA in rushing defense (132.6) under Kaumeyer last season. Kaumeyer was hired by head coach Bob Toledo last season after serving as defensive coordinator for San Diego State.

Analysis
: Don't be surprised if Kaumeyer becomes Kentucky's defensive coordinator down the line. Brooks probably assured Kaumeyer he would be next in line for the job. As for the Green Wave defense, the unit played fairly well by Tulane standards but still didn't live up to expectations considering how many seniors it had on the defensive line. In addition, the defense played terrible in fourth quarter almost every game and cost the team at least two games (Memphis and Army come to mind) because of its ineptness against no-huddle offenses.
