Recap vs. Houston

When you hold a team to 32% shooting from the field while shooting 52% yourselves, it's easy to predict who likely won the game. However, the Houston Cougars still came out on top of the Green Wave last Saturday afternoon in Fogelman, 66-56. Two early fouls on David Gomez in the first half forced him to the bench, but the Wave were able to hang around through great play by Donnie Stith and trailed 29-28 at halftime. This despite going only 5-14 from the free throw line. The Cougars were just 4-22 from three point range in the half and you figured they would find their touch eventually.
After a back and forth start to the second half, the Cougars went on a 13-0 run to push their lead out to 16 points. The Wave would cut it down to 8 with 6:34 remaining but more threes by Houston negated any basket by the Wave down the stretch. The Wave never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Stat of the Game: Where to begin? 27 turnovers, 11-24 FT's, 16 offensive rebounds for Houston, 37 Cougar fast break points...the numbers all point to a Cougars victory

Player of the Game: Donnie Stith was perfect from the field and kept the Wave in the game in the first half despite foul trouble on David Gomez

Quote of the Game: "Give credit to Houston, they have excellent players and they exposed our weaknesses. We have to get better but we still have a chance to be a good basketball team." -Head Coach Dave Dickerson

This was a very frustrating game to watch. Tulane played fairly well except for two main areas that it's succeeded in all season: turnovers and free throws. It cost them games against UAB, UTEP and now Houston. If they get it together by the tournament, though, the Green Wave could be a dangerous team for everyone not named Memphis to play.

This must be especially frustrating for the team since they've had a chance to win three more conference games than they have. 8-1 in conference play puts them in the hunt for making the NCAA Tourney
